General Statement
The Real Instituto Elcano (Elcano Royal Institute) is a private entity, independent of both the Public Administration and the companies that provide most of its funding. It was established, under the honorary presidency of HRH the Prince of Asturias, on 2 December 2001 as a forum for analysis and debate on international affairs and particularly on Spain’s international relations. Its output aims to be of use to Spain’s decision-makers, both public and private, active on the international scene. Its work should similarly promote the knowledge of Spain in the strategic scenarios in which the country’s interests are at stake.
From its inception the Real Instituto Elcano considers itself a non-partisan –but not neutral– institution that seeks to promote the values by which it was inspired and which, by means of multidisciplinary analysis of existing and –especially– forward developments, aims to establish a global strategy resulting in political proposals having a practical application.

First, the follow up, study and analysis of international news in their various dimensions in as much as they affect Spanish society. This task will generate Working Papers of an academic nature (which might eventually appear as books), and of the Analyses of the Royal Institute, a series of shorter commentaries with a more journalistic flavour.
Second, the distribution of these documents either through the Bulletin of the Royal Institute, or mainly through our website, which will reflect the Institute’s activities and where the visitor will be able to find both the Institute’s own documents and other relevant texts from different sources.
Third, the organization of seminars, simposia and discussion fora. The Real Instituto Elcano understands that in a globalized world, the establishment of a network of contacts between institutions and people is essential. It therefore wishes to maximise relations between the different agents, cooperating with all those interested in the development of international and strategic studies.
Moreover, the Real Instituto Elcano’s activities, insofar as it wishes to represent all national viewpoints and to be a global agent, take place in Spain and abroad.
