General Statement

The Institute of World Economics of the Centre for Economic and Regional Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences focuses on global economic trends and their effects on Hungary. It is the oldest and most experienced institute in this field in Hungary. As the successor to the Institute for World Economics founded in 1973, the Institute adopted its current name and structure on January 1st, 2012.


The Institute's researchers have been evaluating economic trends for several decades. The Institute is committed to comparative economic and political analysis in a historical context, to understanding and explaining the effects of global trends, and to analyzing the successful and unsuccessful responses of individual countries to world economic questions. The Institute attaches great importance to broad dissemination and acquaintance with its work.

Objective of the Euromed / Middle East programme

Both the Research Groups on European Integration and on Developments Economics have a research interest partly connected to the Euromed region. The research activity of the Institute and of the researchers is policy oriented, focusing on the political economic backgrounds of the EU’s Mediterranean Policy and on the economic, political and security perspectives of the Southern Mediterranean countries.
